So, by way of example, here (sorted alphabetically) is a short list of Members of Parliament, Government Ministers and other political figures that have provided unhelpful, useless and often obstructive responses to letters they have been sent about this matter, demonstrating that they have no interest in listening to the electorate:
Marilyn Ashton ( Chairman, Harrow East Conservative Association) writes - after a delay of many months - that she has raised the issue with Bob Blackman,MP and will be looking into the matter. **Many months later, I am still waiting to hear further from either Mrs Ashton or Mr. Blackman. **Surprisingly, A follow-up letter months later, suggesting that Mr. Blackman be deselected has elicited a response from both parties. Hopefully there will be some progress soon. |
Bob Blackman (Current local MP, Harrow East - Conservative) was first written to in March 2010. After many reminder letters, he finally responds in March 2011, that "...the two year time limit for taking disqualification proceedings [against company Directors] has expired... on 20 January 2011". [ Yes, all because of your indifference, Mr. Blackman]. **Having re-established contact with Bob Blackman in August 2012, we hope that he will finally start doing what he paid for & represent his constituents in Parliament. |
Gordon Brown ( Former Prime Minister - Labour) claims that he asked the Department for Business, Enterprise & Regulatory Reform to respond to me - this was in 2009. I am still awaiting their response. [n.b. the Department for Business, Enterprise & Regulatory Reform later became the Department for Business, Innovation & Skills]. **Neither organisation could be bothered to write back. |
Karen Buck ( Local MP, Westminster North - Labour) Was contacted by former employees living in her constituency. However, she claims that she cannot help because " [E]mployment law is not my field of expertise". **So, contrary to popular opinion, Parliament doesn't create the laws we're all supposed to live by? |
Vince Cable ( Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills - Liberal Democrat) was too busy poncing about on a television dancing programme to respond to any correspondence. |
David Cameron (Current Prime Minister - Conservative) was told that my local MP wasn't interested in the matter, and so writes - after a considerable amount of time - that he "...is unable to intervene" and " If you have not already done so, you may wish to ask your local MP for further advice or assistance." |
Nick Clegg ( Liberal Democrat Leader - Liberal Democrat) says he is "sorry to learn of this situation", which "seems very unfair", but claims that he cannot intervene, since I am not his constituent. He adds, presumably as a touch or irony, that the Liberal Democrats are fully opposed to the mistreatment of employees and that they entirely support workers rights... |
Edward Davey ( Minister for Employment Relations, Consumer and Postal Affairs - Liberal Democrat) asserts that it is "...not in the public interest to commence disqualification procedures [against company Directors]". **I wonder how many employees need to be taken advantage of before the matter becomes in the Public interest?!? |
The Department for Business, Innovation & Skills - Despite being sent multiple letters (including one from former Prime Minister Gordon Brown in 2009), and my making multiple complaints to the Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman, this organization eventually responds in 2011!, that the delays were apparently "a combination of administrative errors and large volumes of correspondence", but claiming they can find "no grounds for action". **Which I think translates from Bureaucrat speak as: "the entire department is completely incompetent". |
Iain Duncan-Smith ( Secretary of State for Work and Pensions - Conservative) says that issues regarding employment law are matters for the Department for Business, Innovation & Skills to respond to. |
Tim Farron ( President of the Liberal Democrats) was complained to about Edward Davey's unhelpful and obstructive reply, but responds that he doesn't "have the jurisdiction or authority to intervene in this situation". He suggests that I write to the Department for Business, Innovation & Skills [who won't respond] or my MP [who also won't respond]. **Really helpful advice Tim. |
Lord Feldman of Elstree ( Co-Chairman of the Conservative Party & Chairman of the Party Board) notes my comments, and says that it is up to each elected Member of Parliament to represent their constituency as they feel is most appropriate. **So Conservative party HQ is perfectly happy for MPs to ignore their constituents? |
Barry Gardiner ( Local MP, Brent North - Labour) Was contacted by former employees living in his constituency. Hopefully, he will be more helpful than Bob Blackman. |
Dominic Grieve ( Guardian of the Public Interest - Conservative) refuses to clarify how Edward Davey can say that this matter "is not in the Public Interest" and will not confirm how many employees need to be exploited before the matter becomes "in the Public Interest". |
Kwasi Kwarteng ( Chairman, All-Party Parliamentary Corporate Governance Group - Conservative) responds that he is unable to help, because I am not his constituent. He says that he will forward my letter to Bob Blackman. **Predictably, Mr. Blackman has ignored this, and now Mr. Kwarteng is also refusing to respond to further correspondence. |
Ian Liddell-Grainger ( Chairman, All-Party Parliamentary Group on the Pharmaceutical Industry - Conservative) Couldn't be bothered to respond to any correspondence. |
The Police: Refused to get the Fraud Squad involved after hearing about this rogue employer (despite Stephen Pound's advice to the contrary). So, upon visiting South Harrow Police Station, a Policeman who would only identify himself to us as QA7557 insisted that it was not an offence to withhold earned wages, and neither apparently is it fraud. Therefore, the Police have no interest and will neither investigate the matter nor refer the issue to any more senior department. |
Patrick McLoughlin ( Formerly Government Chief Whip - Conservative) claims - after a substantial delay - that he has no authority to intervene in a Member's dealings with his or her constituents, and must respect their right to represent their constituencies without interference. **Despite the House of Commons Information Office saying the opposite!. |
Tony McNulty ( Disgraced former local MP, Harrow East - Labour) had been too busy over-claiming the expenses on his second home, to respond to any letters, and also appeared to be completely uninterested in the problems faced by constituents in and around the Harrow area. |
Ed Miliband ( Leader of the Opposition - Labour) was keen to call a Parliamentary enquiry over the LIBOR fixing scandal, despite there being no law to stop that happening. We suggested an enquiry into the behaviour of the Directors of the company that we worked for. **Mr. Miliband couldn't be bothered to respond to the letter |
George Osborne ( Chancellor of the Exchequer - Conservative) Knowing that Employers have taken advantage of Employees, such as my co-workers and anyone in a similar experience to ourselves. Mr Osborne, instead of taking action against bad employers, decides to introduce legislation making it even more difficult for mistreated employees to start Employment Tribunals. |
The Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards writes "...the Commissioner has no powers to investigate complaints such as your own about the way an MP has dealt with an individual case which includes how - or indeed, whether - they have replied to a constituent. Also the Commissioner has no powers to investigate complaints about Government bodies or agencies." **I wonder if this Government watchdog has any powers at all... |
Stephen Pound ( Local MP, Ealing North - Labour) suggested getting the Police involved, but this idea was quickly squashed by the constabulary - who completely refused to have anything to do with the matter. Mr. Pound then said he couldn't help further, since I wasn't his constituent (despite legal actions having to be started in a court within the jurisdiction of the business rather than the worker). However, he did say that he would write to the then Harrow East MP, Tony McNulty, but Mr. McNulty refused to respond to either of us. Mr. Pound now refuses to respond to correspondence too. |
John Robertson ( Chairman, Associate Parliamentary Corporate Responsibility Group - Labour) Couldn't be bothered to respond to any correspondence. |
Dan Rogerson ( Chairman, All-Party Parliamentary Group for the Packaging Manufacturing Industry - Liberal Democrat) Couldn't be bothered to respond to any correspondence. |
The Serious Fraud Office Couldn't be bothered to respond to any correspondence. |
Barry Sheerman ( Chairman, All-Party Parliamentary Group on Management - Labour Co-operative) Couldn't be bothered to respond to any correspondence. |
Sarah Teather ( Local MP, Brent Central - Liberal Democrat) Was contacted by former employees living in her constituency. Hopefully, she will be more helpful than Bob Blackman. |
Gareth Thomas ( Local MP, Harrow West - Labour Co-operative) Was contacted by former employees living in his constituency. Hopefully, he will be more helpful than Bob Blackman. |
Baroness Warsi ( Formerly Co-Chairman of the Conservative Party & Minister without Portfolio) Couldn't be bothered to respond to any correspondence. Presumably because she was too busy working out how to increase her own House of Lords expenses. |
Chris White ( Chairman, Associate Parliamentary Manufacturing Group - Conservative) Couldn't be bothered to respond to any correspondence. |
Iain Wright ( Chairman, Associate Parliamentary Group on Business, Finance & Accountancy - Labour) Couldn't be bothered to respond to any correspondence. |
